What it does

Sizes a steel beam bearing plate seated on a concrete support per the CISC / CSA S16 bearing-plate method. Step 1 computes the required bearing area from the concrete bearing limit (A_req = Pf / (alpha*phi_c*f'c)) and its square equivalent. Step 2 sizes the plate thickness from one-way cantilever bending about the beam k-line (n = B/2 - k; tp = n*sqrt(2*fp/(phi_b*Fy)) with fp = Pf/(B*C)).

Reports the area and thickness utilizations, snaps the provided plate to the next standard thickness, and shows both metric and imperial values. Includes an interactive plan view (drag plate edges to size B and C, with the required-area square overlaid and the k-lines / cantilever n drawn) and an interactive section view (drag the load arrow to set Pf, drag the plate face to set the provided thickness, with the uniform bearing-pressure distribution shown). W-section flange-width / k library, advanced resistance-factor overrides, a Vf bearing-demand guard, and CSV/JSON/Print export.

Defaults reproduce the source design workbook exactly.

What it does not do

Design aid / screening only. 51, matching the source workbook) with no confinement / sqrt(A2/A1) enhancement. Plate thickness is a one-way cantilever check about the k-line only (no two-way / biaxial bending, no web local checks).

Library flange-width and k values are starter/approximate CISC data and must be verified. The plate-to-beam weld/anchorage, beam web bearing (use the Web Bearing & Stiffener tool), and the supplied beam reaction are not designed here. Engineer review required.

How to use it

Use for preliminary beam bearing plate sizing and a reviewed calc package. 3 edition, verify the beam k / flange width and reaction, and check the plate weld/anchorage with an engineer.

Use Steel Beam Bearing Plate Designer in your own projects

Every tool ships inside the CoLateral desktop workspace, so a result can stay attached to the project, the drawing, and the review trail it belongs to instead of ending up in a loose spreadsheet.

Outputs are design aids and stay in draft until a qualified engineer reviews and approves them.
