What it does

g. a W-beam reinforced with 1" rebar). 18, 10M–55M) and imperial (ASTM A615, #3–#18) size table, singly or as a spaced group, modeled as solid circular steel.

Drag/snap components on a canvas, edit parametric concrete/plate rectangles live, and compute gross section properties (A, centroid, Ix, Iy, Ixy, Sx/Sy, rx/ry, principal axes, weight) plus transformed-section estimates via modular ratios when E values are available. Detects component contacts/overlaps and material pairs, and recommends the matching CoLateral connection design tool (steel-steel, wood-wood, steel-wood, steel-concrete, wood-concrete) or records a future-handoff when no tool exists. 18 / ASTM A615, wood geometry is generated from standard dressed sizes, and custom/manual entries are flagged unverified.

What it does not do

3 member or connection design checks. Transformed properties assume full composite action; slip, fastener spacing, and load transfer must be designed separately. Steel library is starter/sample data, not a verified CISC table; wood E/density must be engineer-entered; contact detection for shaped sections is bounding-box based.

Reinforcing bars are modeled as solid circles at their nominal area/diameter - bar welding, development/anchorage, and the strain compatibility/composite action of added reinforcement are NOT checked. Rotation is limited to 90° increments.

How to use it

Use to study built-up section geometry and properties and to route connection design to the linked tools. Verify all section data against published tables and design every component interconnection before relying on composite properties.

Use Built-Up Section Studio in your own projects

Every tool ships inside the CoLateral desktop workspace, so a result can stay attached to the project, the drawing, and the review trail it belongs to instead of ending up in a loose spreadsheet.

Outputs are design aids and stay in draft until a qualified engineer reviews and approves them.
